How to Find Anything with Search

When you already know what you’re looking for, Search is the quickest way to get to it. Instead of clicking through categories, you type a word or two and open the right item straight from the results—a family member, a document, an account, or a business.

Say you’re on the phone with your insurance company and they ask for your policy number. Type insurance, and your policies appear right away so you can open the one you need. Or your child needs their passport details for a school trip form—type passport, or just their name, and it’s there.

You can open Search two ways:

• Select Search in the left-hand navigation.

• Press ⌘ + K on a Mac or Ctrl + K on Windows.

Before you type anything, Search shows your Recently viewed items, so if you were just looking at something you can jump right back to it.

Start typing and results appear as you go, each with a small preview image to help you spot the right one. You don’t need to remember the exact name—a single word is usually enough.

Search looks across everything you’ve stored in your household, including:

• Family members

• Documents like passports, driver’s licenses, and insurance policies

• Financial accounts

• Businesses and service accounts

Select any result to open it. Documents open in a preview you can read right away, and everything else opens on its own page.

When you add something to Trustworthy, we automatically read it and capture the key details—so Search looks across the information about your items, not just their names. You can search by:

• Names and titles—like a family member’s name or “Auto Insurance”

• Categories and types—like passport, vehicle, or insurance

• Key details on an item—such as account numbers, policy numbers, and important dates

• Contact details—phone numbers, emails, and addresses saved to your people

• File names—like “2023-tax-return.pdf”

Does Search read the text inside my documents?

Not the full text buried inside a PDF or scan. If you search for a phrase that only appears deep inside a document file, Search won’t pull it up on its own. The good news: when you upload a document, Trustworthy reads it for you and lifts the important details onto the item—so a passport or insurance policy is still easy to find by its number, the person it belongs to, or its category.

The best way to find something is to search for the item, the person, or the category it belongs to—rather than a phrase from inside the document itself. If you’d rather ask a question in plain language, Chat can help—see below.

What about documents Trustworthy doesn’t recognize?

You’re covered more than you might expect. Whenever you add a document, Trustworthy reads it and creates a short summary and a set of keywords that capture what it’s about—the key names, dates, and topics—and those are searchable too. So even a general document you’ve filed can often be found by what’s in it, not just its title. Recognized documents—like a driver’s license or insurance policy—go a step further, with specific details such as policy and account numbers made searchable as well. Either way, giving a document a clear title and filing it in the right category makes it easiest to find later.

Search and Chat are both here to help you find things, but they work a little differently:

• Use Search when you want to open a specific item and you know roughly what it’s called—for example, typing Geico to pull up your auto policy.

• Use Chat when you have a question and want an answer, like “When does my passport expire?” Chat reads across your information and answers in plain language.
